Abstract:
Stem traits of maize decided stem lodging resistance. Whether the row orientation and planting pattern affects the stem strains associated with stem lodging was not clear. The experiment with planting pattern of wide-narrow row (80 cm + 40 cm) and uniform row (65 cm, CK) in North-South (NS), East-West (EW) and South by West 20 degree (SW) orientation was conducted in field. Stem traits associated with stem lodging were measured. The results showed that cob position height coefficient under wide-narrow row was significantly decreased. Row orientation influenced stalk crushing strength at the second internode, water content at the second, fourth and sixth internodes and stem diameter coefficient at the fourth internode. The interaction between row orientation and planting pattern affected stalk crushing strength at the second and sixth internodes, fresh weight/length, and stem diameter coefficient at the fourth internode. Therefore, suitable row orientation and planting pattern could affect some stem traits associated with stem lodging in Dehui City, Jilin province corn planting area.
